Hello all-
Per my announcement in the league Discord on December 16th, we are changing the arbitration scale for players in Years 4-6 to better reflect the progression of our league and of the real MLB. Before getting into the changes, I want to make it clear that we will have a soft rollout for the 2024 season (detailed below) before fully adopting the changes for 2025. This is so there is plenty of time to prepare for the full change but still allows us to implement change ASAP
Without further ado, here is how the arbitration scale will work going forward:
We will now base salary off of Fantrax score rather than statistics. This will enable a quicker and smoother calculation for those rolling over the Master Roster while also fully encompassing all of the stats that go towards winning in our league. A player's Fantrax score will be multiplied by two numbers to get a salary
First is a ranking multiplier. This allows us to account for the fact that Fantrax scores are generated on a scale instead of being a direct calculation of statistics themselves. Here are how ranking multipliers shake out:
Hitters:
Starting Pitchers:
Relief Pitchers:
Please note that these rankings are for that specific position. The easiest way to see this ranking is by going to Fantrax, setting the stats to "20XX Regular Season - YTD", selecting only the position group you want to see (Hitters, SPs, RPs), and setting the display per page to 250 or 500 in the bottom right hand corner. The number you're looking for is under "Rk". Do NOT use the number under "RkOv"
The second multiplier is based on the scale year a player is, much like what we have now. This simulates real life and the increasing arbitration values by year for players. This multiplier is:
Hitters and Starting Pitchers:
Relief Pitchers:
Note: the Relief Pitcher multipliers here are 2/3 of the Hitter and Starting Pitcher multipliers, so these are rounded for display purposes while in the actual calculation they are exact (ie, calculation uses 0.70 * 2/3 = 0.466666666...)
The final step is rounding the resulting number to two decimal places. This number is the player's salary in millions for the ensuing season
Combined with all of this, we will raise the minimum salary of Year 4-6 players from the current $1M to a new level of $2M. This is to stay in line with these other raises
Let's show some examples of the difference in player costs under the old system and the new system so everyone has an idea what's in store. This system is NOT going in place for 2023, but I am using 2023 salary for the purposes of this example:
Bo Bichette:
Old Salary - $3.00M
New Salary - $8.46M
Framber Valdez:
Old Salary - $5.40M
New Salary - $9.31M
A.J. Minter:
Old Salary - $6.00M
New Salary - $7.24M
******************************
In order to facilitate a smooth rollout, all arbitration values will be multiplied by 0.75 for 2024 ONLY. This will keep arb salaries at 3/4 of what they will be in 2025 so that the change is not so sudden. Additionally, all of this will come with an increase to the salary cap. For the 2024 season, we will increase the salary cap from $120M to $135M (we were due for a $5M increase regardless of these changes). For the 2025 season, we will increase one more time from $135M to $145M. Spreading out the increase over two offseasons is also an effort to prevent too many major shockwaves from these changes
Please comment below on these changes and if you have suggestions, all of which will at least be considered. Understand that all of this is in an effort to bring our league up to the modern day and add more strategy in roster construction, specifically with scale players
