Baseball. A grueling monster. 162 games, followed by a post season. Sounds straightforward right? Wrong, there is an immense amount of parity in the sport which is what makes it so much fun. One large part of the parity in baseball is the movement of free agents, especially coveted free agents. So today we are going to try and outsmart parity and let you know where the top 5 RFA as voted by the league will be heading.
Our Players:
Nolan Arenado, 3B, OAK
Gerrit Cole, SP, KCR
Nate Eovaldi, SP, MIA
Marcell Ozuna, OF, ARZ
Patrick Corbin, SP, BAL
Am I surprised by this list? No. But I am excited that it is 5 players from 5 different teams.
1. Nolan Arenado
Based on the current cap space that Oakland has, I would consider it a very very very far off point that they lose Arenado. This team possesses 63M in cap space so it really will be up to them to match literally any offer, if another team went all in then only Baltimore and Philly could over bid Oaklands available cap. In a perfect world, the A's do not need to sign anyone else seeing as they have 25 men currently, but you can always use upgrades. Arenado is a top player that can help lead a team and whoever ends up with his bat in the lineup will be sitting in a great spot.
Milams Top 5 Possible Landing Spots: OAK, PHI, BAL, CIN, TEX
One Fun Thought: Oakland resigns Arenado and trades him to Colorado
2. Gerrit Cole
A pitcher I loved during his time in Pittsburgh and loving his resurgence for the Astros this past season in a rotation with Verlander, Keuchel, and Morton. But that is real life, let's talk about in MLBC. He is an RFA for a team who has a pretty standard amount of cap in comparison to the rest of the league. In all honesty, I love the makeup of this team so I feel like it would take a crazy offer in order for KC to not match it, but it is still fun to look at other possibilities. As mentioned with Arenado, there are teams that could swoop in with more cap, 16 to be exact. So there is a lot more flexibility for a team that wants to throw a boatload of money at Cole, and I feel if a team gets greedy they will get stuck with a large contract OR if KC matches it they will lose Dickerson to another team.
Milams Top 5 Possible Landing Spots: COL, KC, CIN, MIA, PHI
One Fun Thought: KC lets Cole walk and takes the compensation and finds another pitcher for a lower cost.
3. Nate Eovaldi
A monster for Boston after coming on in 2018 and you knew it would be fun to watch him everytime out. Lately I have been hearing whispers of him moving to a closer type role which would impact his stock, but fot this sake I am still looking to him as a SP. Miami's money situation, less than KC, so were sitting at arounf 16-20 teams that will out-cap the Marlins this offseason. With this, I believe Eovaldi is going to be on the move. I like the talnet on the roster but is there a rebuild looming that I do not know about? I feel like the Marlins with take their compensation for losing him and find other ways to fills holes going forward, especially with the uncertanty of Eovaldis future.
Milams Top 5 Possible Landing Spots: KC, COL, MIA, CIN, PHI
One Fun Thought: Remember the discount pitcher for KC? Here he is. Miami gets compensation and KC gets their discounted pitcher.
4. Marcell Ozuna
Maybe it is just me, but I think a team could do a lot better than Marcell Ozuna. I feel like there are a lot of great OF's in the league and it is a position where you can plug a lot of people in just to fill the hole. I think he will get paid but no matter what the money is, I doubt I will agree with the amount. Arizona is losing him, theres no way around that in my mind. So this 5 spots should be fun.
Milams Top 5 Possible Landing Spots: STL, OAK, TEX, PHI, WAS
One Fun Thought: Signs with Minnesota and then is dealt to one of the 5 teams listed above.
5. Patrick Corbin
Corbin has been a solid pitcher with just a few bumps in his career. He looked to be back on track last season and was a nice mark of consitency for the Blatimore rotation that was also occupied by Robbie Ray and Max Scherzer. Going forward Baltimore has added Chris Sale and I do not see why they would not make it a top priority to bring back someone who meant so much to the fans and the team last season. Baltimore has the most cap of any team after dealing for 46M earlier this week, so as long as they want to match an offer they will be able to do that.
Milams Top 5 Possible Landing Spots: BAL, BAL, BAL, BAL, BAL
One Fun Thought: Any team other than Baltimore signing this guy.
