Some notes about the awards this year:
-- This is the first year since 2015 without a unanimous award winner - as you can see, Miguel Andujar came the closest (80% of first place votes for NL ROY)
-- Speaking of Miguel Andujar, his NL ROY award is the second for the Pirates franchise. They join the Tigers and Nationals as the only three teams with two ROY winners (Xander Bogaerts and Corey Seager for DET, Noah Syndergaard and Aaron Judge for WAS, Jose Abreu and Andujar for PIT) in MCD history. The Pirates also join another elite group of teams to win an award twice: the Nationals (ROY and GMOY), the Tigers (ROY), the Orioles (MVP), the Angels (Cy Young), the Diamondbacks (GMOY and Cy Young), and the Dodgers (Cy Young).
-- Max Scherzer's AL Cy Young award breaks the Angels' streak of winning the award in two consecutive seasons; the last time a team won a player award in back to back seasons was the Angels' crosstown rivals the Dodgers, who had Zack Greinke win the 2015 NL Cy Young while Scherzer himself took home the 2016 award.
-- Speaking of Scherzer, as I just alluded to, he has now won the Cy Young in each league. He is the second pitcher to do that after Clayton Kershaw, who took home the 2014 NL Cy Young with Arizona and the 2015 AL Cy Young with Boston. However, Scherzer is the first player to win the same award twice with crosstown rival teams.
-- Alex of the Angels broke the curse of the AL GMOY career this season when he became the first reigning winner of the award to make the playoffs in the following season. However, he did fall short of his 2017 finish, losing in the ALCS in 2018 after winning the AL the previous year. Can Rays GM (Terry) be the first defending AL GMOY winner to improve upon his finish next season?
-- J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts are the first pair of real life teammates to win the MVP awards in the same season, speaking to their success and the real life Red Sox success in 2018.
-- The NL GMOY award has been won in pairs in MCD history - Jason (ARZ) won in 2014 and 2015, while Alex (WAS) won at least a share of the award in 2016 and 2017. Can Cardinals GM (Wood) follow up his amazing 2018 campaign with an even better 2019 to secure another NL GMOY award and keep the streak alive?
-- Prior to this season, the NL Cy Young had only been won by two NL West teams - the Dodgers and Diamondbacks. With Trevor Bauer of the Marlins winning this season, can a reign of NL East winners begin?
